It teaches the psychological and physical well-being of the mother, her birth partner, and the newborn, regardless of where you are giving birth. You will learn how to train your mind to stay calm and relaxed during every phase of labor.

Is HypnoBirthing a childbirth education class?

Yes. HypnoBirthing covers everything from bonding with your baby to knowing your options in a hospital, birth center, or at home. Topics include induction methods, comfort measures, acupressure, labor and birth positions, nutrition, chiropractic care, and the postpartum stage.

When should I start HypnoBirthing classes?

You can start anytime, but ideally between 18–32 weeks. Starting in your second trimester gives you more time to practice, but it is never too late — classes have helped parents who started as late as 36 weeks.

Will HypnoBirthing be useful if I decide to have a medicated birth?

Absolutely. HypnoBirthing teaches tools to birth calmly, confidently, and positively regardless of whether you have a medicated, unmedicated, or Cesarean birth. The goal is a happier, calmer, more comfortable birthing experience where you feel in control.

Does my partner need to attend HypnoBirthing class with me?

You are encouraged to bring one support person — a partner, doula, or family member — but it is not required. Having a support person attend helps them understand the phases of labor and how to support you, but many parents take the class solo and find it extremely beneficial.

Are HypnoBirthing classes covered by insurance?

Possibly. FSA and HSA accounts can be used to pay for class, and receipts with insurance codes are available upon request to submit for reimbursement. Check with your insurance carrier to ask if your plan covers patient education classes.

Will I be out of it or unconscious during HypnoBirthing?

No. With HypnoBirthing you are fully aware of what is going on around you. You can simply tune out distractions and achieve complete relaxation — you are not hypnotized in the way media portrays hypnosis.

What is the difference between HypnoBirthing and HypnoBabies?

They are very similar methods. HypnoBirthing is the original method, created by Marie Mongan. HypnoBabies was created by a HypnoBirthing instructor and is nearly identical with minor differences in verbiage and meditation tracks.

What is a doula and what is their value?

Doulas are trained professionals who provide physical, emotional, and educational support to parents before, during, and after childbirth. They help prepare you for birth so you feel confident and empowered, and offer continuous support that medical staff often cannot provide.

When is the right time to find a doula?

The earlier the better, as some doulas book months in advance. Starting early gives you time to interview multiple doulas to find the right fit and allows your doula to begin guiding and preparing you well before your due date.

Is a doula the same thing as a midwife?

No. A doula provides no medical or nursing care. Because she has no clinical responsibilities, she can give her complete attention to supporting you for the entire length of your labor.

Does a doula replace the father or birth partner?

No. A doula is an additional member of the birth team who supports everyone in their own role. She helps partners participate at their own comfort level and shows them how and when to use comfort techniques, so partners can enjoy the experience more.

Can a doula help if I have an epidural?

Yes. A doula's presence is helpful during early labor and the epidural placement process, and she continues to provide emotional and informational support throughout — including at the time of delivery.

Do I need to tell my provider I am taking my placenta?

Yes, let your provider know at a prenatal appointment. Most birth locations require you to sign a document for release of your placenta, and your provider may have a form to sign before you arrive at your birth location.

How do I store my placenta until pickup?

Accepted Answer

Bring two gallon-sized ziplock bags and a cooler. Let your birthing staff know you are keeping your placenta — they will help wrap it and place it in the bags. Keep it on ice in your cooler until pickup. Your birthing team generally handles most of this; just make sure you have a cooler ready.

How soon will I receive my birth photos?

Birth photos are delivered within 3 weeks of your birth, with sneak peeks often sent beforehand.

Will the birth photographer use a flash?

Accepted Answer

A speedlight is typically used on its lowest setting, bounced off the ceiling or wall — never pointed directly at you or your baby. Most women do not notice it. If you prefer no flash, it can be turned off, though photos may have more grain or motion blur.
